Next, we will evaluate our patient's jugular venous pulse wave form. We identify the impulse at the inferolateral aspect of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck. To help you assess the contour of this impulse and its relationship to systole, we have placed a cotton swab over the carotid pulse. Compare the movement of the jugular vein to the movement of the carotid impulse.
