Patent Ductus Arteriosus

  • Common cause - pathologic continuous murmur
  • Pressure aorta > pulmonary artery
  • Pressure aorta > Murmur loudest in systole

A patent ductus arteriosus is a common cause of a pathologic continuous murmur. In the absence of pulmonary hypertension, pressure in the aorta exceeds that of the pulmonary artery throughout the cardiac cycle, producing continuous flow and, therefore, constant turbulence. Because the pressure difference is maximal during systole, the murmur is loudest in systole.
