In this still-frame of a parasternal long axis view, labels identify the right ventricle, ventricular septum, aorta, left ventricle and left atrium. A large ventricular septal defect is illustrated by the gap between the ventricular septum and the aorta. Note that the anterior wall of the aorta lies anterior to the septum, identifying so-called aortic overriding. Note also that the posterior wall of the aorta maintains its normal relationship to the mitral valve. The right ventricular outflow tract and pulmonary trunk cannot be seen in this view and their status cannot be determined.
