Your choice: Supplemental oral iron tablets
Iron deficiency anemia impedes production of normal red blood cells, interfering with the body's adaptive mechanism to hypoxemia. Anemia also increases cardiac output, adding to the work of an already abnormal heart. Cyanotic infants should receive supplemental oral iron if fed either breast milk or a formula that does not contain added iron. Cyanotic patients of all ages must maintain adequate body iron stores.
