Our patient underwent successful surgical repair with no significant residual abnormality. He was advised, nonetheless, to undergo periodic evaluation by a cardiologist familiar with congenital heart defects in the adult. It is important to monitor his electrocardiogram, because right bundle branch block almost always occurs as a result of surgery. Progressive increase in QRS duration can lead to significant cardiac rhythm abnormalities. Post operative patients must oberve bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis for six months. Patients requiring prosthetic material for the repair, such as a right ventricle to pulmonary artery graft, must observe these bacterial endocarditis precautions indefinitely. Many patients develop significant pulmonic valve regurgitation following repair. Right ventricular volume and function must be monitored regularly, primarily by echocardiography in such patients.
