Torsade de pointes (“twisting of points”) is a form of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. The QRS exhibits alternating polarity around the isoelectric line. Torsade de pointes is always irregularly irregular and usually faster than typical ventricular tachycardia. It is associated with a prolonged QT interval, which may be multifactorial. Torsade often occurs following sustained or transient slowing of the heart rate. Self-limited short runs may occur, but there is a risk of sudden death.
