Duration refers to the length of the murmur in terms of the proportion of systole or diastole that it occupies. For example, a murmur lasting throughout systole is called holosystolic or pansystolic. It often obscures the first sound and may obscure the second sound. Let us listen and observe a holosystolic murmur in a patient with a ventricular septal defect (VSD).
